The Big Bend Police Department’s history reaches back over 80 years to 1928, with the naming of Village Constable Roy Ellerson, and C.W. Rose and J.P. Saunders as the two Justices of the Peace. In those days, the village encompassed just over a half-mile with a population of 271 residents. Fast-forward to 2013, with the village stretching out to about three and a half square miles and a population of 1,321. The Police Department now employs three full-time officers, including the Chief, a Lieutenant, and a Sergeant. Additionally, there is a part-time Detective, and nine part-time Patrol Officers. In 2012 we added two Auxiliary Police Officers positions, and in 2013 we started a Reserve Police Officer program, which currently has an authorized staff of four.
Today we are faced with many more challenges, and a larger (and still expanding) area to address the needs of the public. With the advantage of having village residents who are dedicated to working with us to keep Big Bend safe and strong, there is nothing that we can’t accomplish. Our goal is simple: to provide quality, professional police service to our community.
On behalf of the men and women of the Big Bend Police Department, I would like to welcome you to our section of the web site.
Michael J. Hartert
Chief of Police
